It is certainly one of the most unbalanced finals in history. This Tuesday, Vendée Herbiers Foot, National club, challenged PSG, defending champion and winner of eleven trophies in the competition. If the suspense seems limited on paper, this final should, however, take on a historical aspect.
PSG plays this final in 4-3-3 with Trapp – Dani Alves, Marquinhos, Thiago Silva (c), Berchiche – Lo Celso, Thiago Motta, Rabiot – Mbappe, Cavani, Di Maria
A bit unlucky early in the game with 3 posts in the first 20 minutes (Lo Celso 20 ‘, Mbappé 8′ and Lo Celso again 20’). It is logical that Lo Celso opens the scoring sheet at the 26′ with a nice shot with his left 1-0. A magnificent free kick from Dani Alves at the 34′ which shaves the right top corner of Pichot. At half-time, PSG leads only 1-0 against Herbiers who suffer but hang on !!
Second period starts on the same tempo as the first one. A superb one / two Cavani and Mbappé pass the ball back heel, but the Uruguayan misses his duel against Herbiers’ keeper (50′). On the next opportunity, the referee refuses a goal from Mbappé after consulting the VAR because of Marquinhos hand ball. Parisians continue to push but the Herbiers does not break.
68 ‘Draxler replaces Motta.
73′ penalty for PSG following an obvious foul of Pichot on Cavani in the box. Cavani transforms himself 2-0. Pichot takes a yellow card for this foul.
Led 0-2 in the last quarter of an hour, Herbiers take offensive risks to try to score a goal in this historic final.
85 ‘Pastore replaces Mbappé
86 ‘Meunier replaces Alves
94′ Goal for Herbiers !!! Couturier runs alone full axis, passes Trapp who misses his exit, the public is going nuts, but Thiago Silva saves in extremis. It’s over!
PSG wins the 2018 French Cup by winning 2-0 in the final against Vendée Herbiers Foot!! As expected, Parisians outrageously dominates the final, but not that much on the score sheet. Herbiers are not unworthy, not very dangerous, but well grouped and supportive. The players have deserved guard of honour from PSG, and Captains Thiago Silva and Sebastien Flochon together raise the trophy of the Coupe de France! Wonderful!
Unai Emery’s PSG won its fourth consecutive French Cup, the twelfth in its history, and scored a national quadruple after the championship, the League Cup and the Champions Trophy. Ici c’est Paris!
